Working directly with another production company’s top client, and they love it.

Collaborate > Compete

In the competitive world of video production, we proudly embrace "collaboration, not competition" as a core Heck value. We’re better together, and teaming up with other production companies strengthens us all, leading to better work in the end. Our projects with New Leaf Production Group are a great example of fostering a win-win video partnership. It’s the friendships we made along the way, right? Also that moneyyy.

The Challenge

New Leaf, based in Boston, is a bonafide production company with high-end work and a sterling reputation. But they recognized a need for top-notch motion graphics that they couldn’t fulfill in-house. One of their biggest clients is the famous robotics company Boston Dynamics. While they’re known for viral dancing robot videos, Boston Dynamics’ business depends on high-end product videos to actually sell these robots – requiring motion graphics and animation to bring their inventions to life. So New Leaf faced the age-old dilemma to fill the gap: hire staff artists, sift through freelancers, or partner with another production company? And how to do it successfully with a remote team?

Heck plugs right in to other production companies, expanding their capabilities as true partner studios.

Trusted Remote Team

We understand that for a pro video shop like New Leaf (on the east coast) to include our team (on the west coast) in their client work, it's about more than just delivering great-looking results – it's about fostering a sense of trust, and security: a safe partnership that protects their business, and expands it. Then a layer of camaraderie – when you're in the trenches of a deadline, it helps if you actually enjoy working together, too.

Filling a Crucial Gap

Our first collaboration with New Leaf was an ad for the iconic Spot robot. This project required intricate graphics and titles, and Heck was brought in to integrate seamlessly with New Leaf's post-production workflow as a white-labeled vendor. It went great! The success of this initial project paved the way for more collaborative efforts, including a promo for the factory robot Stretch, where Heck contributed VFX and cleanup. It was another win for all, especially for us die-hard robot fans.

3D Adventures

Then Boston Dynamics requested a fully-3D animated video depicting the warehouse of the future – something New Leaf had never produced before. It was clear that our typical workflow would need to change into a proper 3D pipeline – and for the first time, Heck’s role would need to shift to working directly with the client, and leading the entire creative and animation process.

Naturally, New Leaf had reservations about opening up their close relationship with Boston Dynamics. In our industry it’s understandable to worry about this exposure leading to communication snarls or clients sidestepping agencies to work directly with vendors. However, at Heck we believe in being a trusted specialist at the table (not a white-labeled secret), to offer a frictionless expansion to our partners' teams. In a leap of faith, New Leaf welcomed Heck into the creative meetings with Boston Dynamics, allowing us to lead the way on this fully animated video – while maintaining New Leaf’s client relationship, and profit margins. If they’re selling more video, and we’re helping create it, the rising tide has truly lifted all our boats.

One-shot Wonder

Heck planned an ambitious one-shot story, and mapped out the detailed flying camera move through the factory. We modeled a state-of-the-art building, complete with conveyor belts, trucks, workers, and the hero robots. With every pass of animation we worked closely with both New Leaf and Boston Dynamics to ensure product accuracy, and alignment with the marketing goals. Together, we delivered an awe-inspiring 3D factory tour that was delivered on time and within budget. That’s the Heck way! And the crowd went wild at Boston Dynamic’s events where the video debuted. Don’t miss Spot’s cameo at :55!

Lee Strauss @ New Leaf Production Group

“Client is over the moon on this video and they loved the animations, so great vibes all around right now. Hit it outta the park again!!! Thanks so much!”

Better Together

It’s a testament to Heck's ability to not simply fill a service gap, but to elevate a partnership to new heights. Our journey with New Leaf Production Group and Boston Dynamics underscores our belief in the power of partnership and the incredible results it can yield when two creative teams team up. Now we’re eagerly awaiting the call to collab with those famous dancing robots!
